A Southside Police office has been closed due to high levels of mould.

Opposition Health spokeswoman, Louise Jackson, told MPs that she had been leaked two reports which outlined the extent of mould at the St. David's offices and the Hamilton Police Station.

She said: "I am upset that these reports were submitted to someone in November and no one did anything about it. Toxic mould can be particularly harmful to the young and the old — the vulnerable. It is a very sad state of affairs that more is not being done."

She said the report outlined the type of mould found in the stations and revealed that people were complaining of illness.

"Since November they have known that the air quality is terrible. It' s the same situation as with CedarBridge where they sent staff and students into a building they knew was infested with toxic mould."

Minister of Education Randy Horton took offence to Mrs Jackson's statement and said she was misleading the public and said the Ministry had not allowed people go back to the building after the Ministry discovered the extent of the mould situation.

Mrs. Jackson then asked him to table all of the reports dealing with the issue to prove his statement but Speaker of the House Stanley Lowe told her to move on as the Minister who was responsible for CedarBridge had said the problem had been dealt with correctly.

Works and Engineering Minister Dennis Lister then stood and told the House that Mrs. Jackson was correct and the Southside forensic offices for the Bermuda Police Force did have a problem with mould and was currently closed because of the issue.

He said: "She has said that we are an uncaring Government but let me stand here and say that is not the case. The Southside station is being dealt with and reports on the Hamilton Police Station are being done."

Because a new central Police station is going to be built shortly he said his Ministry was trying to ascertain what work could be done in the Hamilton station to improve it for the short term.
