UBP name branch chairman to run in Hamilton South
Darius Tucker has been selected by the United Bermuda Party to fight the Hamilton South seat currently held by retiring party colleague Maxwell Burgess.
Mr. Tucker, who has lived in the area for 14 years has been the United Bermuda Party’s branch chairman in Hamilton South for the last four years.
Mr. Tucker, who is married with two children, works as the maintenance manager for Wilkinson Estates Limited, leading a staff of eight who are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of some 35 residential and commercial properties.
A trained carpenter Mr. Tucker, 42, wants to create more opportunities for young people to learn a trade.
He said: “I want to see an apprenticeship programme put in place for young people that provides them with a decent standard of living while they learn a trade.
“The National Training Board and the Bermuda College are doing some good work in that area, but I would like to see more.
“Government could encourage smaller contractors to take on young people as apprentices by giving them tax breaks.”
And Mr. Tucker also voiced concern about education. He said: “I want an education system where very child is reading at their grade level.
“Most of the challenges people face as adults can be handled if they are able to read properly.”
