UBP's Warwick branch launches anti-crime website

United Bermuda Party candidates for Warwick Parish speak about their new crime prevention web page, Three Doors Down.

A website aimed at cracking down on crime in Warwick was unveiled yesterday by the United Bermuda Party’s five election candidates for the parish.

Mark Pettingill, Gina Spence-Farmer, R.Wayne Scott, Roddy Simons and Jeff Sousa hope the Three Doors Down site will allow members of the community to keep one another informed about incidents in their area such as burglary and vehicle break-ins and help Police solve crimes.

Opposition Leader Michael Dunkley told a press conference that the name came about after one resident told the party: “If I had known the house of my neighbour, three doors down, had been broken into I might have been able to prevent the same thing happening to my house a couple of nights later.”

Mr. Dunkley said: “We think it’s an exciting initiative to help us combat crime. In Warwick specifically, it seems the incidence of these types of activities is higher than in the rest of the Island.”

He said if the site proved successful it would be rolled out to other parishes. “We are well aware that the Police need all the help they can get. We think this will be a great vehicle for helping the Police.”

Lawyer Mr. Pettingill, who will stand as the UBP candidate in Warwick West when the current Opposition MP Neville Darrell steps down at the next general election, said residents could sign up at www.ubp.bm/3dd to get email alerts about crime.

“It’s a way of community policing and community involvement in taking back neighbourhoods,” he said. “I know people in our constituencies are excited about it. We are really pleased with the concept and we are really happy to roll it out.

“We really want to get back to community-based things and crime fighting is just one of them. Police think this is a brilliant idea. I have spoken with many, many officers to get the feedback.”

Senator Spence-Farmer, who will contest Social Rehabilitation Minister Dale Butler’s Warwick North East seat, said a youth survey conducted by the Ministry for National Drug Control in 2003 showed that youngsters in the parish were most at risk on the Island of becoming involved in drug use, delinquency, truancy and violence.

Mr. Scott will stand in Warwick North Central, Mr. Simons in Warwick South Central and Mr. Sousa in Warwick South East.

The UBP will hold a public meeting at St. Mary’s Church, St. Mary’s Road, Warwick tomorrow at 7 p.m.
