Blackie Talbot education fund gets cash boost

The Ross (Blackie) Talbot Golf Charity Classic recipients show off their massive checks, ranging from $50,000 to $150,000. The beneficiaries are (LtoR) The Ross (Blackie) Talbot Foundation, Raleigh International Bermuda, The Ross (Blackie) Talbot Education Award, Masterworks Foundation and Knowledge Quest.

In its fifteenth year, the Ross ‘Blackie’ Talbot charity has far exceeded its goals — raising over $400,000 to go towards education on the Island this year.

The Charity Classic’s theme this year was “Educating the Youth of Bermuda” and, in order to do so, they launched their education awards and raised funds to support four other education charities.

Yesterday Jeanne Atherton, of the executive committee of the Ross ‘Blackie’ Talbot Charity accepted the cheque for $150,000 towards the charity’s education awards.

Ms. Atherton said: “I am pleased to accept this on behalf of the selection committee. We have received applications from a diverse group of students.

“We have reviewed them and they are all pursuing their third and fourth years of school. As we go forward we can help with them pursuing a career and then come back to Bermuda to contribute. We don’t want kids who have the intelligence to lose an opportunity because of financial problems.”

In order to apply for the RBTEA awards, students must be able to demonstrate financial need, have finished their first two years of a bachelor’s degree at Bermuda College or otherwise, be Bermudian and have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4-point scale.
