A 47-year-old Smith's man was fined $700 after admitting to repeatedly cursing the Police.

In court on Friday, Crown counsel Paula Tyndale said Police attended the bus shelter in Hamilton on May 15 at 8.25 p.m. after receiving reports that a man was causing a disturbance.

Officers found Richard Allen Smith, of Kilderry Lane, shouting at patrons and approached him to find out what the problem was.

He swore at the officers, demanding to know what he had done and also screamed obscenities at the those in the area, asking who had called Police on him.

When asked to refrain from swearing, he swore again at Police and was arrested for using offensive words in a public place and taken to the Hamilton Police Station.

At the Police Station he continued screaming obscenities at officers.

In court, it was revealed Smith had previous convictions dating back to 1977 — one for the same offence — and another for behaving in a threatening manner.

He told Acting Magistrate Justin Williams: "I am very sorry for disrespecting your officers, I was drinking alcohol at the time, I have thought about my actions."

Mr. Williams ordered that Smith, who works as a chef, pay the fine by June 29, or spend 70 days at Westgate.
