Dame Lois' funeral procession route announced

These banners appeared over the weekend on North Shore Road, in the Devonshire north stronghold where Dame Lois Browne Evans held her seat for four decades.

There will be two viewings of the body of Dame Lois Browne Evans at Alaska Hall and City Hall tonight and tomorrow, the Progressive Labour Party has announced.

Court Street between Ewing and Angle Streets will be closed to traffic from 5.30 to 9 p.m. tonight. The viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at Alaska Hall. That viewing will be followed by a further viewing tomorrow morning, with the body “lying in repose” at City Hall from 8 to 11 a.m.

From City Hall, the body will be moved to Alaska Hall until shortly after 12 p.m. Again, Ewing and Angle Streets will be closed to traffic.Contrary to information provided by the Police Service, there will not be a third viewing at Alaska Hall from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity (the Anglican Cathedral) on Church Street.

Government has issued an advisory on the route of the procession honouring Dame Lois from Alaska Hall to the church and from the church to St. John’s Church graveyard at the junction of St. John’s Road and Langton Hill.

The cortege — led by the Bermuda Regiment Band and Corps of Drums — will leave Alaska Hall at 12.10 p.m. tomorrow, and travel south on Court Street and then turn right onto Reid Street and proceed westward to Parliament Street, where it will turn north. Once outside the Sessions House, the cortege will pause outside the gate to the grounds of the lower house of Parliament and Supreme Court of Bermuda to recognise Dame Lois’ decades of service in both chambers.

From there, the procession will turn left onto Church Street and travel westward to the Anglican Cathedral grounds for the service. Church Street from between Burnaby and Court Streets will be closed to traffic between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Traffic on the rest of the procession will be stopped to allow free passage. Upon leaving the church, the procession will travel westward on Church Street to Par-la-Ville Road, and then go northward on Par-la-Ville/Woodlands Roads.

The official cortege turn onto St. John’s Road and will pause outside Dame Lois’ long-time home before finishing the journey a short distance away at the graveyard.

There will be traffic restrictions all along the procession’s route.

Union Street will be closed to traffic between 11.30 a.m. and 12.15 p.m. or until the Regiment Band has left for Alaska Hall.

Dame Lois’ family and Government would like to thank the Mayor of Hamilton, Sutherland Madeiros and the Corporation of Hamilton’s cooperation.

Government further reminds the public that as a “tribute and out of respect” for Dame Lois, it is encouraging all residents to show their “measure of respect for this National Figure by participating in this historical event”.
