Teen admits causing girlfriend's death by dangerous driving
A young man has admitted to killing his girlfriend through dangerous driving while on a day out from prison.
Jay Cody Steede was riding a bike with 15-year-old Krystal Mae Babon as passenger when it crashed on Harbour Road, Warwick, on March 19, 2005.
According to reports at the time, Steede was on day release from Co-Ed where he was serving a term of corrective training.
The then Commissioner of Prisons, Hubert Dean, said Steede, 17, was meant to be back by 7 p.m.
The crash occurred at 10.15 p.m.
Steede, of Farmstead Lane, Sandys, who is now aged 19, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving when he appeared at Supreme Court.
He denied driving the motorbike when he was underage and Crown counsel Cindy Clarke asked for this charge not to be proceeded with.
No details of the death by dangerous driving offence were outlined during Steede’s brief court appearance.
However, his lawyer Mark Pettinghill said he suffered from “a high degree of depression” and has been receiving counselling in the aftermath of his girlfriend’s death.
Asking for a pre-sentence report to be prepared, Mr. Pettingill indicated he would argue for a non-custodial sentence to be imposed on Steede.
Chief Justice Richard Ground granted the defendant bail until July 2 when the sentence date will be fixed.
A number of people also entered pleas during the monthly arraignments session at Supreme Court. Robert Damon Green, 27, of DeSilva Close, Pembroke, denied a string of charges relating to an attack on Meshach Ible on August 27 2005.
According to information read out in court, Green burgled Mr. Ible’s home in Crawl Point Lane, robbed him of a chain using force, wounded him with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possessed a knife on the Railway Trail in Crawl and assaulted Mr. Ible. Green was granted bail until his Supreme Court trial on July 9.
A co-defendant Tio Tyrone Weeks, is charged with the same burglary but did not turn up to court to enter a plea.
Mr. Justice Ground issued a warrant for the arrest of the 31-year-old, of Middle Town, Pembroke.
Shaki Tuzo, 26, of Boundary Terrace, Devonshire, pleaded not guilty to importing cocaine and possessing it with intent to supply on November 22 2005. Tuzo, who is not represented by a lawyer, was bailed to appear before the court again on July 2 when his trial date will be fixed.
