Six students earn David Allen tourism internships
Six students have won positions in Bermuda’s overseas marketing offices through a Government scholarship.
The David Allen Summer Internship Programme, started by the late Tourism Minister, and aims to show students that there are a variety of jobs available within the tourism industry.
Premier Dr. Ewart Brown said in the House of Assembly on Friday: “The programme, Mr. Speaker, provides exposure to young people to the countless opportunities available in tourism that they may not otherwise associate with the industry.
“Students will work in the fields of advertising, public relations, direct marketing, sales, communications, regulatory management and policy development. During the course of the programme they will join specific workgroups and participate in the implementation of the 2007 tourism plan.”
The Premier added that several past scholarship recipients have gone on to pursue careers in tourism.
This year’s recipients are Kristin Alexander, DeShae DeShields, Laura-Linn Smith, Tiffany Roberts, Jarita Bassett and Shaunay Simons. They will be placed in different New York offices as well as the regulatory and police unit of the Bermuda office.
Dr. Brown also spoke of his visit to National Youth Tourism Day and said the Government realised the importance of engaging students at a young age and exposing them to the variety of options available in the industry.
