Chef imprisoned for drunken racial slurs, death threats

A guest worker who admitted using racial slurs and threatening to kill a security guard while drunk was sent to prison yesterday to think about his actions. In Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Aaron Bald, 27, of Stowe Hill, Paget, a chef for a chartered yacht company, pleaded guilty to shouting obscenities and making threats to a security guard and Police on Monday.

Senior Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney told the court that security guard Eldon Daniels was patrolling the Waterfront Property Buildings on Pitts Bay Road, Pembroke at around 3 a.m. when he saw Bald “staggering” along the sidewalk.

Mr. Daniels approached him to see if he needed assistance and he replied: “You f***ing nigger! Get out of the way or I’ll f**k you up!”

The court heard that when Mr. Daniels left him alone, Bald then followed him along the street while shouting, “F**k off nigger! I’ll f***ing kill you!”

Eventually, Bald started to chase the man down Waterloo Lane, near Miles Market and, fearing for his life, the guard radioed for Police.

Subsequently, officers arrived on scene and were able to restrain Bald, before he yelled to P.c. K. Thompson: “You f***ing dumb b***h! Leave me alone, f***er!”

He was arrested for threatening to kill Mr. Daniels and using the obscenities in a public place and was taken to Hamilton Police Station.

In court, Bald apologised profusely to Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner, saying: “I was drunk, sir. I recognise I have a severe problem with anger and never before have I uttered such hatred.”

Mr. Warner appeared astonished when defence lawyer, D. Anthony Richardson, requested a conditional discharge, citing his belief that Bald was drunk at the time and has written letters of apology to those involved.

It was also revealed that Bald’s work permit will not be renewed because, according to him, it “embarrassed” his employers and he is due to leave the Island in September.

“I will seek anger management programmes as soon as I return home. I have a problem — sometimes I black out and just say anything,” Bald said to Mr. Warner.

“I’m sorry that I brought my problems to your Country. I’m ashamed and sometimes just want someone to hurt me.

“I agree that I am fuelled by a natural hatred that just comes out of me and I don’t know why.”

At one point, Mr. Richardson made reference to the Bible in his defence, when Mr. Warner refuted: “What does the Bible say about speaking? Drunken tongues? He speaks what’s really in the heart.

“He (Bald) called a man a nigger and said he’ll try to kill him and that’s not offensive to you?

“Mr. Bald, I’ve thought carefully about the offences and your behaviour is outrageous. That in 2007, you can visit someone’s country and get drunk and call someone a nigger and threaten to kill them.”

Mr. Warner added that he had considered Bald’s “genuine remorse” and guilty plea and his acknowledgement that he has underlying problems.

However, Mr. Warner stated that the only way to deal with such uncivilised offences was for Bald “to understand that we must deter such behaviour,” before sentencing him to 30 days at Westgate for each offence, to run concurrently.
