Teachers will have their long-running pay dispute decided at a Labour tribunal next week.

Government confirmed last night that an arbitration hearing by the Labour Disputes Tribunal has been scheduled for Tuesday.

A spokesman said: “Labour and Immigration Permanent Secretary Robert Horton today confirmed that the Hon. Derrick Burgess, Minister of Labour and Immigration, has referred the current dispute between the Bermuda Union of Teachers and the Ministry of Education, Sports and Recreation for settlement by the Labour Disputes Tribunal.”

The tribunal will aim to end the impasse between teachers and the Ministry of Education which has dogged Bermuda’s public education system for the past year. The disputes relate to the new Collective Bargaining Agreement and the hearing will decide on salaries for the next teachers’ contract. Lawyer Larry Scott has been appointed chairman, with Gary Phillips and Armell Thomas acting as arbitrators.
