Magistrate throws out cancer victim’s charges

Charges were dropped against a defendant who told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner she was suffering from cancer.

Lucinda Hall had been due to stand trial for allegedly attacking a female Police officer who stopped her for speeding on September 16 last year.

At Magistrates’ Court yesterday, the 36-year-old made an emotional plea to Mr. Warner in which she claimed to have had diabetes at a young age, suffered from cancer and was the victim of a robbery around the time of her alleged offence.

Asked by Mr. Warner why she had not shown up for previous court hearings, Hall replied that she had been on medication and had also spent some time in hospital for stress.

After a moment’s consideration Mr. Warner told her: “Merely out of compassion, I have discharged the information. Go in peace.”

Hall, of Hermitage Drive, Devonshire, had also faced a charge of resisting arrest.

Devonshire man fined for having cocaine

A drug user who was caught with cocaine and cannabis in his pocket was fined $2,000 yesterday.

Police searched Ricardo Madden, 21, of Verdmont Valley Drive, Devonshire, after arresting him on another matter in Pembroke on March 7.

Yesterday, Magistrates’ Court was told that, after officers found the substances in a micro bag in his pocket, Madden declared: “It’s weed and crack.”

Madden admitted two charges of possession and said he had turned to drugs but was trying to get his life back together.

He was fined $1,000 for each offence by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner.
