Tournament honours patron Paul Lepercq
WITH only slightly more competitors entered than last year, it took under an hour to complete the Seventh Lepercq Memorial karate tournament which honoured arts patron Paul Lepercq.Unopposed gold medalists were Andrea McKey (form and weapons), Zico Mello (novice forms), Raymond Packwood (weapons) and Dominic Butterfield (black belt forms).
Jonathan Spiers, representing soft/Chinese style, had a little more work to beat Bruno Parker 2/1 in that category for underbelt men and proceeded to a 3/0 grandchampionship victory over hard/Japanese style winner Raymond Packwood.
The one kumite match between Dominic Butterfield and Jonathan Spiers was closely fought. Although Spiers scored a three point jodan geri almost immediately, Butterfield rebounded with repeated single tsuki to finish in the lead 6/5 as time ran out.
Tournament promoter Skipper Ingham, head coach of the Bermuda Karate Organisation, assistant coach Gladwin "Roots" Phillips, and competitors Scott Kennedy and Malachi Darrell will represent Bermuda at the US Open Karate tournament in Orlando, Florida on the July 4th weekend.
