No comment from Govt. on trash pickup delays
Government last night refused to comment on when residents can expect their trash to be picked up - despite it remaining uncollected in some parishes throughout the weekend.
A rubbish collection due to take place on Friday morning did not happen, meaning bags of rubbish have sat outside homes from Pembroke to St. George’s for more than two days.
Shadow Works and Engineering Minister Jon Brunson complained yesterday that the situation had been allowed to reoccur and said residents should have been told that the pick-up would not take place.
“Having taken a drive through the east end and talked to a number of residents about the trash collection, I guess their issue is there has been no communication,” he said.
“Now we have a scenario where we have trash that is just lining the roads and it’s become a pollutant again. It’s a health hazard and it’s just an eyesore. We are in peak (tourist) season and there is trash all along the road especially in the east end. You would have thought that they would have learnt their lesson and told people this was going to happen.”
Government spokesman Robin Holder said he believed the failure to collect the trash was connected to ongoing work to rule action by refuse collectors but would not be able to comment fully until today.
Garbage collection was disrupted last Thursday due to a union meeting for Government workers. No one from Bermuda Industrial Union could be contacted for comment yesterday.
