Commissiong wants Opposition to produce memo

Last night, Rolfe Commissiong called on the opposition party to produce an alleged confidential memo, which speculates on Bermuda's next election date.

On Monday, Shawn Crockwell, chairman for the United Bermuda Party, revealed that the party had seen a memo meant for the Premier, which stated August 16 should be an election date. Mr. Commissiong, consultant to Premier Dr. Ewart Brown, however, said this speculation was the worst form of politics the Island has ever seen.

"I would welcome Mr. Crockwell sending the memo to us so the Premier could be apprised of its contents. We haven't seen any memo," he said. "Mr. Crockwell and his party are doing a great disservice to the country in indulging in a form of politics that can only lend to destruction of the country and can rightly be categorised as gutter politics of the worst kind."

Mr. Crockwell revealed that the confidential memo the party was given disclosed that Premier Dr. Ewart Brown's strategy is to dissolve Parliament after the wrap-up of the next Senate meeting today so a writ for an election could be 'dropped.'

The memo justified the date because a gag order remained on the media and many Bermudians who support the United Bermuda Party would be travelling, according to the opposition chairman.

Leaking this alleged memo, according to Mr. Commissiong, has called into question the ability of the opposition's chairman and has failed to garner further support in the community.

"It's always sad when someone begins to lose his well-earned integrity and credibility, which appears to be the case with Mr. Crockwell," he added. "He refers to a memo that neither the Premier nor the party have ever seen. What is great about his allegations, however, is that a majority of Bermudians are not buying it."

Last night Mr. Rockwell, however, hit back saying the questions of integrity and credibility should hardly be directed towards the UBP and questions about the memo are addressing the wrong issue.

"There is a significant difference between having access and having possession of a document. We became aware of the election speculation through a confidential source," he said.

"However, any question of integrity and credibility are those that are not being addressed by the other side. They should stop trying to fight over the minute details."
