Trio fined for failing to show for jury duty — one man warned

Three summoned potential jurors were fined the maximum amount for failing to show up for jury duty this week.

Brian Doyle, Sofia Lindo-DeCouto and Kerrie Aubrey were given $300 fines on Tuesday for not showing up for jury duty on Monday.

Ms Aubrey told Puisne Judge Charles-Etta Simmons it was a “stupid but honest mistake”. She explained she had come to Supreme Court last week Tuesday and was told to come back in a week’s time. She said she didn’t know she was supposed to come on Monday during jury selection.

Mrs. Lindo-DeCouto gave a similar story. She too had come to court July 3 and was told the same thing. She explained she had recently gotten married and moved out of her mother’s home. The number that was on the record wasn’t her updated number. Mr. Doyle offered the same excuse for failing to appear Monday morning. He was also told to come to court for jury duty the following week. He said he had been caught up with clients and didn’t receive a message to come for panel on Monday morning.

Justice Simmons told the trio they should have checked to see when they were to be in court for jury duty because it is their number one priority.

She explained that she has the ability to give them the maximum fine because she didn’t think any of their stories were excusable.

Earlier the same day, Domico Coddington came to court to explain why he had failed to show up for jury duty. He told the judge he, like the other three received a summons that said July 3. He came to court that day and said an Asian woman told him to come back in a week. He took it to mean a week to the date.

Justice Simmons did not fine Coddington and gave him a warning. She told him to give the jury officers his updated information so that he could be notified for the next jury selection.
