Revving up for technical education

Youngsters have been learning the laws of motion — by building miniature racing cars at summer camp.

Bermuda College is holding two fortnight-long camps this summer for students interested in technical education.

The first camp ended on Friday with a visit from Education Minister Randolph Horton, who watched a race of the colourful cars.

The wooden vehicles, propelled by carbon dioxide, were built entirely by the students, who learned Newton’s third law of motion, friction and speed in the process.

Tutor David Waltham, a design and technology teacher at Dellwood Middle School, said building the cars gave the boys a fun, hands-on experience and got them interested in technical education at an early age.

Llewellyn Trott, the college’s vice-president for applied science and technology, said Bermuda College was working on improving the technical courses it offers and was refitting its technical education centre.
