Women admit stealing
A former Masters Ltd. cashier and her friend admitted to stealing and receiving goods yesterday in Magistrates' Court. Michale Shannay Bean, 24, and Jerricka Quaddriyah Jacobs, 31, were charged with separate counts for the incident happening on May 31.
Bean, of Glebe Road, pleaded guilty to falsifying an account, namely a cash register at Masters to the value of $224. Jacobs, of Alexander Road, admitted stealing a cutlery set, a 12-ounce container of paint, a floor mat, a trash can and two Jasmine air fresheners totalling $139.58. The court heard the pair are friends and were caught when vice president Mark Stearns reviewed receipts and a DVD from the security cameras.
When interviewed by Police, Bean said: "Yes, I stole the things because I knew my friend couldn't afford it".
Jacobs told Police: "I'm guilty. I deliberately walked out with the goods and I didn't pay for them. I apologise to Masters."
Magistrate Shade Subair asked the defendants if they had anything to say to the court. Both apologised and said it would never happen again. Bean said: "It just happened. Nothing was done intentionally."
Ms Subair replied: "It wasn't an accident and was done intentionally. It was a bad decision."
The Magistrate also said the pair appeared to lack remorse for their actions. The defendants were each given six month prison sentences suspended for two years, meaning if they appear before the court again, the sentence could be activated.
Addicts seeks help
A Pembroke woman, who admitted she needs help to kick her drug habit, pleaded guilty to possession of drug equipment.
Earlin Karen Smith, 44, of Laffan Street, was arrested on February 5 in Pembroke on an unrelated matter and taken to the Hamilton Police Station.
While she was in the holding cell, she was searched by an officer who found one glass vodka bottle with powder residue, one glass Henessey bottle with powder residue and silver wire mesh.
The two bottles and wire mesh all tested positive for cocaine.
A tearful Smith told the court, with tears coming out of her eyes, that she would like help for her addiction.
Ms Subair ordered a Social Inquiry and BARC report and bailed the defendant in the amount of $1,000.
She will reappear for sentencing on August 24.
