Underage bike rider given jail warning
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner warned a 16-year-old caught driving her friend's motorcycle underage she should be heading to jail to help straighten her out.
McKara Burch, of Union Street, Hamilton, racked up over $1,500 in fines yesterday in Magistrates' Court after she pleaded guilty to riding underage, riding an unlicensed bike and no third party insurance.
At 10.55 p.m. on June 29, Burch was stopped by Police who, when asking for her licence, discovered she was too young to be riding a motorcycle over 50 cc.
However, yesterday the Berkeley Institute student appeared to not care about the consequences of her action, even laughing at Mr. Warner at one point.
"She is before the court and she doesn't even care. Maybe you should settle down and maybe a stint down at the co-ed would be really beneficial," Mr. Warner said.
After asking who she lived with, Burch's father came forward saying: "I have to agree. We have been having some difficulties with her attitude and in school."
Mr. Warner then fined Burch $300 for driving while underage, $250 for an unlicensed motorbike and $1,000 for no third party insurance.
