Breaking News: Women hit "defenceless" teenager over cellphone, lawyer claims
A 17-year-old girl was beaten in the head with a stick and a rock by two older women because she wouldn’t let one of them borrow her cell phone, prosecutors allege.
Victim Brittany Symonds needed ten stitches and four staples in her head as a result of the alleged attack in St. David’s at the hands of Garrina Cann, 21, and Trimiea Roland, 22.
Opening their trial at Supreme Court this morning, prosecutor Takiyah Burgess told the jury: “This case is about an attack on a defenceless 17-year-old girl by these two defendants because she wouldn’t let one of them use her cell phone.
“It’s about a girl who was beaten with a piece of wood by the defendant Cann and later on beaten with a rock by the defendant Roland.”
Ms Burgess explained that Miss Symonds was on her cell phone in St. Luke’s Lane, St. David’s on the night of February 2 when Cann approached and asked to use her cell phone.
Miss Symonds said no, and turned to walk away, and Cann began beating her in the head with a piece of wood.
“Trimiea Roland then joined in and started hitting Brittany with a rock to assist Cann,” alleged the prosecutor. “You will hear evidence that Cann and Roland were in this together, that Cann started the attack and Roland came to assist her.”
Cann, from Pembroke, and Roland, from St. David’s, deny wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
Miss Symonds, from St. David’s, took the stand late this morning to give evidence for the prosecution.
