US Coast Guard rescues sailor

A 31-year-old Turkish mariner is being treated in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for a broken arm after being airlifted off a cargo ship this morning.

The sailor was winched off the merchant ship Askabat by a US Coast Guard helicopter just after 8am today and was brought to the Island.

The helicopter and a Coast Guard C130 aircraft from Port Elizabeth, North Carolina stopped and refuelled in Bermuda before making the rescue.
