Search called off for missing seaman
A 29-year-old man who fell off a cargo ship has been declared lost at sea, according to Bermuda Maritime Operations.
An Indian national aboard the Bermuda-registered MV Livorno Express was discovered to have gone overboard on Friday, when the cargo vessel was 150 miles south-southwest of Bermuda.
Assisted by the Maritime Operations, the Italian flagship Bestore Tre and US Coast Guard aircraft, the Livorno Express searched for 36 hours but has now continued its course.
According to a Maritime Operations spokesman: “A US C130 aircraft departed Bermuda around 2pm Saturday and turned back at the end of daylight. The search was suspended that night.
“They did give a very good attempt with search patterns based on probable drift with currents, but the length of time before he was discovered missing opens up a large search area.”
The missing man, an engineer, had last been seen six hours before the alarm was raised.
