Bermuda garbage trucks hit by mechanical faults

Out of action: Garbage trucks at Marsh Folly in Pembroke

Mechanical faults with the Island's garbage trucks have disrupted collection, a Government spokesman revealed last night.Four trucks have not been working and only eight of the required 12 were collecting residential waste yesterday. As a result waste collection crews have been struggling to keep up with the heavy post-holiday demand, said the spokesman. The Royal Gazette understands that Wednesday's scheduled collection of garbage from homes at the eastern end of the Island did not take place.Garbage collection from homes in the Island's western parishes is not believed to have been affected so far.The Government spokesman said last night: “Today, for various mechanical reasons the Waste Management Section of the Ministry of Public Works was short four trucks so that only eight of the required 12 trucks were collecting residential waste.“As a result of the shortage of trucks, and the normally heavy residential collection volume after the holiday season, waste collections crews are still struggling to catch up with collections.“The Department asked for the public's patience while crews catch up and also reminded residents that they can use the public drop off at Tynes Bay, Devonshire from 7am to 7pm every day.”
