Michael Douglas says he has cancer 'beat'
Actor Michael Douglas, who revealed last year that he was suffering from throat cancer, has announced: “I've got it beat”.Mr Douglas, son of Bermudian actress Diana Dill and actor Kirk Douglas, was diagnosed on August 16 with a tumour at the base of his tongue.He underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatment for stage IV cancer. The disease is generally graded I to V, with IV indicating that the cancer has started to spread.Mr Douglas announced on NBC's ‘Today' show that his tumour has disappeared.He also told host Matt Lauer he felt fortunate to have a mother now 87 years old, and a father aged 94: “I feel good about those genes.”Mr Douglas added: “But it's definitely a third act. And so you're a little more conscious of your time in how you choose to spend it.”The interview was the actor's first since he began treatment.A publicist for the Mr Douglas confirmed for The Royal Gazette: “Things are looking good. The tumour is gone and (Michael) now has to be monitored monthly for the next few months but all signs are pointing to a successful recovery.”Mr Douglas has no plans to visit Bermuda, according to the publicist, who said the actor is focused on performing in Steven Soderbergh's ‘Liberace' in May or June.Mr Douglas, 66, and his wife, actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, resided in Bermuda until recently. The family currently lives in New York.
