Govt unveils cruise ship schedule

The Queen Victoria, launched by Cunard in December 2007.

St George's will have one extra cruise ship visit in 2011 compared to last year, despite calls from East End businesses to get more tourists to the area.Last year it had 24 cruise ship visits, while his year the number will inch up to 25, with the Veendam again coming and anchoring in Murray's Anchorage. Last year it was unable to stay at St. George's due to the weather and instead headed straight for Hamilton.Transport Minister Terry Lister announced this morning that cruise ship visitors were to increase by 11 percent in 2011. He said there will be an expected total of 385,200 visitors this cruise-ship season, compared with 347,931 last year. While the Island will have several new cruise lines including The Queen Victoria, Aidaluna and premium ships Crystal Symphony and Silver Whisper, all will be berthing at docks in either Dockyard or Hamilton.Mr Lister said the increased numbers would boost the economy and said: “For 2011 we are expecting a total of 180 cruise calls, bringing an expected 385,000 cruise visitors with projected revenue of $81 million injected into the local economy.“Bermuda has strategically positioned itself to be in an enviable position in regards to our cruise product and we remain an attractive destination, not only for the larger cruise lines that typically operate in the United States and the Caribbean, but also with the smaller, premium lines that generally do world cruises with a stop in Bermuda.”Tourism Minister Patrice Minors applauded the news and said the additional cruise ship callers would be good for Island's economy.“This is wonderful news for Bermuda tourism. Without question, business generated from the cruise sector is an important element of our tourism industry and a major contributor to our economy.”She said the Island's cruise ship product had been a source of intense discussion and debate in past years.“We have listened intently to the concerns of merchants and other interested groups regarding the loss felt by the scaled back number of cruise callers to our shores.“And in response, we are pleased to make today's important announcement signalling the increase of cruise visits for the 2011 season.”
