Support needed for community clubs to help young men

Community clubs remain the one institution that continues to attract large numbers of young men, particularly those at risk for gang violence, but are struggling financially.Wayne Caines, of community action group Rise Above Bermuda, said these clubs provided at risk men with support and mentorship, yet were struggling to find the financial support they needed to adequately run its programmes.Speaking in front of the Joint Select Committee on violent crime and gun violence this morning, Mr Caines said there were three areas including family, faith and fellowship, also known as community, that needed to be developed. He said community clubs were currently the institutions of best contact in the lives of young black men and needed more membership, volunteers and resources."A football club in troubled areas attracts young men and attempts to provide support, mentorship and a haven in their development."Yet these organisations do not represent the 'sexy' kind of charities that receive annual corporate donations and support - because of the clientele they engage."In one sense the greatest single asset is the ability of these organisations to attract men who have been shunned or have been undeserved in other aspects of society."Mr Caines said local and international businesses also needed to invest in the development of these clubs.People must also give their time and money to these grassroots organisations, rather than always to the over-funded established charities.Useful websites: www.riseabovebermuda.org, www.gov.bm
