Lottery scam causing concern for Police Service?s Fraud Unit
Police are warning about the latest lottery scam which has sparked worried calls from around the Island.
The letter, which appears to be from a European country, claims the recipient has won a cash prize and must provide personal information including copies of a passport and/or driver?s license as well as banking details in order to receive their winnings.
In addition, the letter suggests ten percent of the money be returned to the company?s ?Foreign Operations Manager? for handling the transfer of the funds.
So far this week, the Fraud Unit has received over a dozen copies of the deceptive document from concerned local businesses and residents.
A police spokesman said: ?This correspondence is not legitimate and that individuals/businesses should not reply to these requests for personal or banking information.?

Teen girl missing
Police have appealed for information about a teenager missing from home for more than a week.
Runaway Alisia Marie Correia was last seen at her Southampton home on February 1. Police said the 16-year-old had recently been spotted in the Shinbone Alley area of St. George?s.
Anybody with information about the teenager should call the Juvenile and Domestic Crime Unit on 299 4477.
Trucker arrested after Wednesday?s crash
A trucker hurt in a Pembroke road crash has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving. The driver?s rubble truck hit a wall and flipped over on Langton Hill, near the junction with Mount Hill Road, just after 10 p.m. on Wednesday.
Firefighters cut the 43-year-old from his truck the single vehicle crash, which Police said happened yards from his home. He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with suspected head injuries and his condition was yesterday said to be stable.
Police confirmed the man, later arrested on suspicion of drink driving, was getting treatment in a general ward.
Teens arrested for shoplifting liquor
Three teenagers were arrested on suspicion of shoplifting at the Market Place, Church Street, Hamilton, on Tuesday. Officers attended the store after a report of three young men acting suspiciously in the liquor aisle.
Two 15-year-old boys from Sandys and a 16-year-old Warwick man were taken to Hamilton Police Station and later bailed into their parents? custody. Police said a search of the youths? bags found a bottle of Jack Daniels, a bottle of Hpnotiq, two bottles of Alize and a bottle of Hennessey. Inquiries are ongoing.
And a burglar stole a silver and blue Nokia flip-top cell phone and a silver and black half-shell helmet from a home in Rec-View Hill, Devonshire, on Tuesday.
The break-in happened between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Police are investigating and anyone with information should call them on 295-0011.
Motorcyclist suffers broken legs in crash
A motorcyclist was rushed to hospital with two broken legs after his bike collided with a car in Sandy?s. The accident happened in Somerset Road, near the junction with the Railway Trail, at about 7.20 p.m. on Tuesday.
The motorcyclist, a 26-year-old Southampton man, was flung over the car and his bike was extensively damaged. He was in a stable condition in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital last night.
The driver of the car, a 53-year-old Warwick woman, was not injured, though her car received front-end damage. Witnesses to the crash should call police on 295-0011.
Light injuries after crash in Hamilton
Police attended a crash involving a motorcycle and a car in Hamilton Tuesday night. Passers-by claimed the accident, at the junction of Front Street and King Street, involved a maroon Jeep which flipped onto its side.
They said a young man was stretchered onto an ambulance with what appeared to be a broken leg. Police would not comment on the accident, which happened at about 6.35 p.m., except to say it was ?not significant?.
Man banned from driving for two years
A suspected drink driver triggered a danger road chase through St. George?s before refusing to take a breath test, a court heard.
Officers spotted a back light was not working on Garth Eugene Cabral?s motorcycle and signalled for him to pull over.
Senior Crown counsel Paula Tyndale said the defendant slowed but did not stop ? and then accelerated away from Police, driving on the wrong side of the road a number of times.
When Cabral?s bike stopped, officers noticed he was unsteady on his feet and his eyes were glazed. The 27-year-old said he had drunk a few drinks, but refused to give a breath test just before midnight on December 23, 2005.
Cabral, of St. David?s Road, apologised for the incident when he appeared before magistrates yesterday. He was fined $1,500 and banned from the road for two years.
Man denies stealing ice machine
An ice machine worth more than $6,000 has been reported stolen from a Hamilton city club.
David Wayne DeSilva appeared before magistrates yesterday and denied stealing the $6,500 machine from Champions, Reid Street, between February 2 and 3. The Tulo Lane resident, 40, also pleaded not guilty to receiving the stolen machine. The case was adjourned until May 9 for trial and bail was set at $1,000.
Trial date set in theft case
A man has appeared in court charged with a string of fraud-related offences.
Marvin Woolridge, 42, faces a total of 13 charges. He is accused of stealing 30 Bank of Bermuda cheques and of trying to use them to buy electrical equipment worth thousands of dollars from Hamilton electrical stores.
Woolridge, of Loyal Hill, is accused of attempting to use the cheques to buy a $1,600 television, a $3,109 television, two laptops worth $3,700 and a home entertainment system, worth $445.
The construction worker, who told the court he denied the charges, was granted bail in the sum of $5,000 and is due to re-appear before magistrates on February 14.
Crash probe launched ? nine months later
Police are investigating a crash involving a motorcycle and two emergency patrol cars.
The collision happened outside A-1 supermarket, Middle Road, Paget, at about 7.45 p.m. on Friday May 6, 2005.
Two unmarked Police cars were travelling west on a 911 call when one was in collision with a bike carrying two people heading on to Middle Road from a private entrance.
The second patrol vehicle then shunted into the back of the first, in a crash that left at least one of the bike riders with minor injuries.
Nine months later, Police have launched an appeal for witnesses. They particularly want to speak to the driver of a white car travelling east which stopped to let the cyclist out of the driveway.
It is understood the inquiry has been launched after a complaint was made to Police. Anyone with information should call 299 4279.
Belco man was impaired
A Belco engineer has been banned from the road for drink driving. Police stopped Graham Thomas? bike on South Road, Paget, in the early hours of January 21. A breath test revealed he was just over double the legal limit.
Thomas, 37, of Happy Talk Lane, Paget, admitted drink driving when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner yesterday. The defendant apologised to the court and asked for leniency because he used his scooter for work.
But Mr. Warner told Thomas he had no discretion on drink drive sentencing and fined him $1,000 and banned him from driving for one year.
Money stolen from home
Cash has been stolen in a daylight house break in Pembroke. The victim was upstairs when she heard a loud noise in the lower part of the house.
After investigating she found that someone had broken into the property, at Trelawney Lane, and $65 was missing. The incident happened at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
Man denies housebreaking
A Pembroke man has been charged with breaking into a house and stealing goods worth more than $15,000.
Norman Sonny Bell, 45, denied breaking into a Warwick property and stealing jewellery and household items, between December 19 and 22, last year.
He also denied receiving stolen goods worth $140 linked to the Warwick raid. Bell, of St. Augustine Lane, Pembroke, was remanded in custody by magistrates and is due to appear for trial on May 8.
Tyres stolen from Tires Plus
Police are hunting two men after four tyres were stolen from Tires Plus on Thursday.
The warehouse manager told Police two men entered the Marsh Lane store and asked about buying tyres. As the manager was assisting one man, the other remained in the warehouse.
Then both men left in a light blue car. It was only after the suspects left that the manager discovered that four Pirelli tyres were missing. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
Had cannabis in Hamilton station
A Sandy?s man has appeared in court for possessing cannabis.
Charles Judah Tucker, 34, admitted having 1.29 grams of the drug on him when he was arrested in Pembroke on September 30, 2005.
Tucker, of Cooks Hill Road, was in the jail area of Hamilton Police Station over another incident when the court heard he dropped plant-like material on the floor. When Police asked what it was, he did not respond.
The defendant, who said he had forgotten the offence, was given a conditional discharge and a one-year probation order. This will include random drug testing.
