Breaking News: Bermuda sprinter sets personal best at Delhi games

Bermuda sprinter Tre Houston posted a personal best time of 10.44 seconds to qualify for the third round of 100 metres competition at the Commonwealth Games in India today.

Houston placed second in his first heat with a time of 10.58 before running his PB to finish fourth in his next race.

He said: I’m over the moon right now. Coming out here, I’d only been involved in one other track meet and I was thinking in my head that this is going to be a huge competition and I needed to mentally focus for it.”

Earlier, swimmers Roy Allan Burch and Nick Thomson again failed to get past the qualifying heats, this time in the 100m freestyle, an event Burch had targeted as his best chance of success.

The Olympian finished fifth out of six swimmers in his heat, clocking a time of 51.80 seconds, .20 seconds slower than his personal best, and 2.29 seconds slower than heat winner Grant Turner of England, who finished in 49.87.

Thomson went one worse, finishing last in his qualifying heat with a time of 54.36 seconds, well behind heat winner Joshua McLeod of Trinidad who swam a 52.07.

Out of the pool, New Zealand’s Marina Evakovic needed just 35 minutes to hammer Jacklyn Lambert 6-0, 6-0, in the second round of the women’s singles tennis. Lambert won just nine points throughout the two sets, eight of which came from her opponents own unforced errors.

Meanwhile David Thomas and Gavin Manders are due on court soon for their men’s doubles match against Darian King and Haydn Lewis of Barbados, while later, Tre Manders will begin his Games in the opening heats of the 100m.
