Breaking News: Swimmer narrowly misses finals slot

Kiera Aitken

Kiera Aitken just missed out on place in the finals of the women’s 100m backstroke at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi today.

Aitken swam an impressive 1:04.82 in qualifying, fast enough to secure her a place in the day’s first semi-final. Slightly slower in the semis, Aitken swam a 1:04.87 to finish seventh, nearly five seconds behind the winner of the semi-final Australian Emily Seebohn, whose 1:00.28 was a new Games record.

Aitken had the best day of Bermuda’s athletes, with her swim team-mates Roy Allan Burch and Nick Thomson not making it through their heats in the 50 m Butterfly.

Of the two, Burch posted the faster time of 26.51, but still finished seventh in a heat that was won by Australian Mitchell Patterson in 23.92 seconds.

Thomson meanwhile finished third in his heat, posting a time of 27.08, behind Swaziland’s Luke Hall who won in a time of 26.67.

In the tennis, Lambert sisters Tara and Jacklyn had a day to forget. Tara Lambert was thrashed 6-0, 6-0 in her singles match by Heather Watson of Guernsey, while in the women’s doubles, the sisters faired only marginally better, losing 6-2, 6-1 to Scottish duo Mhairi Brown and Jocelyn Rae.
