Breaking News: Ten years for firing a gun

Omari Gordon

Omari Gordon was today sentenced to ten years behind bars for unlawfully discharging a firearm in public.

The incident took place on November 29, 2008, when Police chased a motorcyclist to Middle Town, in Pembroke. The cyclist, now known as Gordon, 28, of Devonshire, abandoned the vehicle and ran up an embankment, firing a single shot.

He fled to avoid being captured by Police and was on the run for more than a year. On January 10, he was found at a Sandys home, following a tip-off from a member of the public.

Before sentencing this afternoon, Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves took into account Gordon’s early guilty plea, previous good record and show of remorse.

But he said the firearm had never been recovered and recent cases have shown some of these firearms were being used by different people in different offences.

He sentenced Gordon, represented by defence lawyer Charles Richardson, to ten years imprisonment with time in custody to be counted as part of the sentence.

Gordon had denied a further charge of using the gun to resist arrest at last month’s arraignment session and that charge remains on file, not be proceeded with at this time.
