Candidates urge voters to turn out in St. George's elections

The people of St. George?s are being urged not to let forecast high winds and rain stop them from going to the polls today to elect a Mayor and three Aldermen.

The 402 registered voters will have to chose between current Mayor E. Michael Jones and former Deputy Mayor Mariea Caisey who are running head-to-head for the top position.

Mr. Jones, who was elected in 2003, decided to call the election ten months before he had to in order to have a stable Corporation ?team? in place for the coming months when decisions relating to the former Club Med resort site, Town Cut accessibility to Panamax cruise ships and the development of the town and waterfront are expected to be made.

In the 2003 election Mr. Jones beat Ms Caisey by a mere two votes.

Ms Caisey said: ?I want to wish everyone good luck and I hope the weather does not deter voters from coming out.?

And Mr. Jones? message to voters was: ?It has been a pleasure to serve the community and I hope the people will see fit to come out and support the candidates.

?I urge everyone to come out and vote even if the weather is inclement and windy.?

The three Aldermen roles on the Corporation are being contested by Kenneth Bascome, Edward Benevides and Ross Smith, who are all seeking re-election as Aldermen, and former councillors Beau Evans and Steven Hollis who are seeking to step up within the Corporation.

Voters can cast their ballots from 11 a.m. today until 8 p.m. All voters must present photo identification at the polling station.

The election results are expected to be announced by returning officer Robert Lewis shortly after the polls close.

Election for the Corporation?s five common councillor posts has been postponed until February 16 as only four candidates had come forward by the original cut-off date for nominations. Nominations for the common councillor posts now stay open until February 9.
