Chamber members say yes to empowerment, no to red tape
Opposition Race Relations and Economic Opportunity David Dodwell told members of the Chamber of Commerce about his draft bill to widen economic opportunity last week.
Chamber president Charles Gosling said members supported the idea of allowing small businesses a bigger portion of Government contracts but many were concerned about increasing red tape.
?There were really quite some vocal comments from members.?
He said small businesses were already tied up with paperwork for work permits and employment contracts.
Mr. Gosling stressed the Chamber welcomed dialogue with all parties but it could not support a bill which had no chance of becoming law and it was for the Government to table bills.
Mr. Dodwell tabled the bill last year but it stands no chance of becoming law as the Opposition is barred from putting forward laws which have financial implications.
The bill would give small businesses a greater share of Government contracts and would expand access to capital for small businesses.
It also contains additional funding for education and training, greater Government transparency and Government- sponsored small business mentoring.
