Comic Cosby cancels Bermuda trip
Comic Bill Cosby has cancelled his trip to Bermuda.
The legendary Dr. Cosby was due to be the guest speaker at the 85th Anniversary dinner for the Bermuda Union of Teachers (BUT) in two weeks time.
However, after allegations of sexual assault against him prompted a Police investigation in the United States in January, Dr. Cosby began postponing public appearances. His publicist has declined to say if the postponements had anything to do with the allegations.
This week a second woman came forward alleging Dr. Cosby may have assaulted her 30 years ago.
The BUT did not say if the allegations were the reason behind the cancellation of Dr. Cosby?s trip to Bermuda.
Disappointment was evident in the announcement of the cancellation, however, after members of the BUT had spent weeks organising the event.
A press release stated: ?Due to circumstances beyond our control, the BUT has regrettably cancelled its 85th Anniversary celebration, which featured Dr. Bill Cosby as the guest speaker.
?All ticket holders will be given a full refund of their money and may collect their refunds from the BUT offices at 72 Teachers? Place, Church Street. The office hours are Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. You may contact us at 292-6515.?
The American comedian and actor made headlines last year after taking aim at blacks who failed to take responsibility for their economic status, blamed police for their incarcerations and taught their children poor speaking habits.
Speaking at a Constitution Hall event in Washington last May commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision that paved the way for integrated schools in the US., Dr. Cosby told a stunned audience that ?lower economic people were not holding up their end of the deal?.
?These people are not parenting, they are buying things for their children ? $500 sneakers for what? And won?t spend $200 for Hooked on Phonics,? he said.
Dr. Cosby also took aim at parents for teaching their children poor speaking habits. ?They?re standing on the corner and they can?t speak English. I can?t even talk the way these people talk: ?Why you ain?t,? ?Where you is?... And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. ... Everybody knows it?s important to speak English except these knuckleheads. ...You can?t be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth!?
?Cosby was right to yell,? Youth and Sport Minister Dale Butler noted in an opinion column in last November.
?Cosby saw the lack of leadership and the growing tide of restless youth, who were lost because their parents set meaningless expectations, and got caught up in materialism and making life easy for them when they really needed direction towards the next goal. What was Cosby to do??
What the subject of Dr. Cosby?s speech at the BUT 85th Anniversary dinner would have been is not known.
?The BUT would like to take this opportunity to thank all those persons who supported this event, and apologise for any inconvenience caused by its cancellation,? the BUT press release continued.
?We look forward to your continued support when we reschedule our anniversary celebration at a later date.?
