Death through dangerous driving trial fixed for May

The trial of a man accused of causing the death of a Canadian barmaid through dangerous driving will be heard this year.

Donald Iain MacDonald, 28, is accused of causing Anett Farkas' death on September 5, 2005 by driving dangerously on North Street, Pembroke.

Ms Farkas had moved from Montreal to Bermuda only two months before her death. She worked at Robin Hood pub on Richmond Road.

MacDonald, of Hilltop Drive, Southampton, denied the charge in the arraignments session at Supreme Court yesterday. His trial begins on May 14.

Theron Noel Williams, 20, also appeared in court for dangerous driving charges. He is accused of causing grievous bodily harm to Sebastian Jose DeMorias when driving a motor vehicle while impaired in Warwick on January 30, 2005.

On that same date, he is accused of causing actual bodily harm to Etel Dasilva while driving a vehicle on Middle Road, Warwick, in a manner dangerous to others.

Williams, of Town Hill Road, Smith's, will return to Supreme Court for his trial on February 5 this year.

A man accused of sexually assaulting an elderly lady and robbing her on Ferrar's Lane, Pembroke, on November 12, 2006 also appeared in court yesterday.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with aggravated robbery, serious sexual assault, robbery and depravation of liberty. He denied all of the charges. The 54-year-old of no fixed abode is in custody and will appear in Supreme Court again for mention in February at the next arraignments session.

Clyde Ian Saltus, 31, was charged with four counts of obtaining money by false pretences between August 25, 2004 and September 7, 2004. The total amount he is accused of obtaining is $25,300. Saltus, of Happy Valley Road, Devonshire, denied the charges and will return to Supreme Court for his trial on March 5 this year.

The trial of a 49-year-old Southampton woman accused of stealing $24,688 from another woman and forging a number of cheques will begin on February 12. Phyllis Marva Iona Soares, who is also known as Phyllis Burchall, denied stealing the money from a woman called Doris Goodman between June 2002 and April 2003. It is also alleged that on four occasions in 2002, Soares, of Whaling Hill, forged Bank of Bermuda cheques. Her bail was extended.

Isaac Robert Lambe, of Red Coat Lane, St. George's, pleaded not guilty to robbing a man of his wallet on December 10, 2005. The 23-year-old's bail was extended and his trial was set for January 22.

Another man who cannot be named for legal reasons appeared in court on charges of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 14 between June 17 and 26, 2006. The 24-year-old man, of no fixed abode, was released on bail and will return for the February arraignments.

And Wendy Harvey, 37, from Northchurch Lane, will be sentenced on January 26 for wounding another woman on July 11, 2005.
