National Trust event takes root in big way

Islanders turned out in droves to support of the Bermuda National Trust?s annual Plant and Bake Sale at the weekend at the waterside grounds of Waterville Park in Paget and more than $10,000 was raised within hours of opening.

National Trust spokesperson Kate Berry said about 100 eager shoppers were already waiting to purchase the diverse assortment of unusual native and exotic plants before the sale even started. But if you missed it, you?ll have another chance at the annual National Trust Jumble Sale and Auction from Thursday to Saturday at the Whitney Institute Auditorium. Ms Berry said funds raised would go towards the Trust?s preservation work including enhancement of the museums, education programmes, archaeological research, historic buildings and open space maintenance. Last year the event raised $40,000 and auction chair, Hugh Davidson, hopes that this year will be even more successful. Well-known London auctioneer, James Rylands, who appears regularly on the BBC?s television series, Antiques Roadshow, will be joining local auctioneers Andrea Casling and Judiann Smith at the lectern. Bargain hunters will also be able to preview items for the auction on Thursday and Friday. Ms Berry said the Trust has been given a wide range of books, jewellery, linens and some unique and wonderful treasures which will be sold at bargain prices.

The Auction will take place on Saturday and under the hammer will be silver, porcelain, antique maps, cedar, paintings and furniture.
