October Timeline
The month started off with the 11th road death of the year. Andrew Kemp died on October 2 in the early morning hours on South Road in his home parish of Southampton. Officers were called to the single vehicle accident at 3.37 a.m. Mr. Kemp was thrown from his bike and collided with a stone wall. His friends described him as popular, fun-loving and outgoing.
On October 4 disgraced Cup Match hero Gregg Foggo was sentenced to two years in jail for importing more than $30,000 worth of cannabis into Bermuda.
In an advertisement in , Premier Alex Scott apologised for the using of the word "crap" in an e-mail that was mistakenly sent to entertainer Tony Brannon. The e-mail was widely discussed because it included what some considered to be racist remarks. In the e-mail, the Premier wrote that he was "getting tired of listening to, and taking crap from people who look and sound like Brannon". He denied it was a racial reference and cited Oscar Wilde and William Shakespeare to explain the comment.
Bermuda's tenth annual Music Festival was a resounding success. It featured international stars Patti LaBelle, Rev. Al Green and Joss Stone.
On October 10 Bermuda Cement Company workers brought the Island's cement supply to a standstill. They downed tools because of job insecurity in the wake of what they saw as a hostile takeover by the West End Development Company.
BCC was expected to stop running the company on December 31 but with Lt. Col. Burch heading up the Ministry of Works of Engineering talks soon resumed between BCC and Wedco.
Friends and co-workers reacted with shock to the news that Alex Wright an Englishman who worked with Kiassa Limited, was killed in a road accident. Mr. Wright became Bermuda's 12th road fatality. He was described as a "happy, go-lucky type of guy".
Government announced the largest single investment ever in a single sport ? pumping an unprecedented $11 million into Bermuda cricket.
The five-year commitment, announced by Premier Alex Scott on October 13, will help fund ambitious plans to prepare the team for the cricket World Cup in 2007 as well as improve infrastructure and facilities at club's and schools.
Bermuda was no longer the number one Caribbean/Atlantic Island destination according to Cond? Nast Traveller's annual Readers' Choice Awards. It is the first time in ten years that the Island was not rated number one. St. John, US Virgin Islands, was the preferred Island getaway.
On October 25 three men involved in the Wellington Oval melee were found guilty.
A jury of nine women and three men took just over three hours to find KintaKi-Roy Butterfield, Jahcai Morris and Tahir Nesta Bascome guilty of trying to kill Tarik Foster at the St. George's stadiuml. The re-trial took one month.
Bermuda found out that the question of Independence could be decided by a combination of an election and a referendum. Such a "unique solution" would not be ruled out as a way forward for Bermuda to decide its future, according to UK Foreign Office minister Lord David Triesman. That was his reported view after a meeting with Premier Alex Scott in London during a round of talks with the Overseas Territories Consultative Council.
