Runners make an appeal for more consideration from other road users

More and more people are using the Island?s roads to exercise, especially in the dark mornings and evenings, and they are often faced with perilously close encounters with vehicles sharing the narrow highways.

A call has been made by talented Bermudian triathlete and runner Spencer Conway for motorists to be more aware and show greater caution on the roads to avoid an accident with a runner, walker or cyclist.

During the winter months, it is particularly dangerous because of the dark mornings and evenings and also because there are many people out exercising who have made New Year resolutions to lead healthier lives, he believes.

Mr. Conway said: ?I?ve become aware of many more people out running and cycling lately and there is a danger if motorists do not practice awareness. I?m just asking for drivers and riders to show some caution rather than wait until there is an accident.?

Shadow Sports Minister Jon Brunson, who often trains in the pre-dawn hours of morning either by road running or cycling, is backing the call for greater road safety awareness when people are out exercising.

And he has also urged runners, walkers and cyclists to play their part by acting responsibly and safely and making sure they wear bright clothing and, if necessary, reflective bibs and flashing lights.

?More people are exercising in the early mornings and late evenings and there is a real lack of sidewalks. Cars are getting bigger and for athletes and exercise enthusiasts the roads are becoming more dangerous all the time,? said UBP MP Mr. Brunson.

?People need to pay more attention to what is happening on the roads and who is using them and exercise more care and caution.?

He added: ?Those who are out exercising need to take a required amount of caution. It is advisable not to wear black when it is dark and it is advisable to have reflective clothing and a flashing light to alert people of your presence.?
