Smithsonian show's Island debut
The showcase of Bermuda which wowed more than a million visitors during the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington last year is to link up with the annual Agricultural Exhibition in April on home soil.
Bermudians who could not make the trip can enjoy the festival at the Botanical Gardens on April 18-20.
Community Affairs Minister Randolph Horton said the Folklife Festival was the springboard for the Bermuda Living Traditions initiative which is aimed at preserving, reclaiming and reinvigorating local heritage and traditions.
An education kit is to go to classrooms while the work of 20 researchers, who collected archive materials on everything from boat building, cricket and food, will be put into a Folklife archive.
Environment Minister Dennis Lister said the agricultural show would promote Bermuda's ecology and have big participation from schools with 27 signed up already.
Videos of the Bermuda's efforts in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington are now on sale from the department of Community Affairs priced $15 or $10 for participants.
