Spending spree funded by stolen credit cards
A beauty salon worker who went on a spending spree after stealing credit cards from a customer and two colleagues has been jailed.
Mohini Kashyap-Trott splashed out more than $1,500 on clothes, jewellery, CDs and household goods, a court heard.
Kashyap-Trott, 25, was jailed last week for three months when she appeared before magistrates for sentencing.
At an earlier hearing the court was told Kashyap-Trott worked for G & M Beauty Salon, Court Street, when the first offence took place on September 20, last year.
The defendant stole a Capital G card from a colleague?s locker before using it to buy CDs worth more than $200, cosmetics and clothes from French Connection valued at nearly $500 and jewellery worth $500 from another shop.
The victim found out after getting a bank statement.
Kashyap-Trott struck again one week later, stealing a Bank of Bermuda card from a co-worker?s handbag, and using it to buy household goods worth nearly $550 from Masters.
The victim cancelled the card after this purchase, the court heard.
On October 3, the defendant swiped a Bank of Butterfield card from a customer and bought a Samsung cell phone and charger, worth $460.
Paul Harshaw, for Kashyap-Trott, said the crimes were out of character and essentially a ?cry for help?.
He said she co-operated with Police and he said community-based punishment might be more appropriate for the nine-week pregnant defendant. She had no previous convictions.
But Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said the offences were ?systematic? and ?deliberate?.
After reading a social inquiry report, he said a community-based punishment would not be suitable and jailed the defendant.
The defendant, of Euclid Avenue, Pembroke, admitted charges in relation to the theft of the three credit cards.
