Ton-up litter-pickers make Bermuda cleaner
Volunteers spent hours picking up litter from Devon Spring Road at the weekend.
Members of Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB) met on Saturday morning to carry out the clean-up.
They collected 1.04 tons of trash from the roadside and the bushes, which was later disposed of at Tynes Bay. Rubbish which could be used again was taken to the Recycling Plant.
The team was joined by four children ? Michael Mello and Matthew Witkowski, who are taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme at Saltus; Claudie Richardson, from Warwick Academy and Chanell Weeks, from Dellwood Middle School. They spent two hours gathering trash which had fallen into bushes at the bottom of a hill.
Susan Harvey, KBB executive director, said: "If 12 people can pick up over a ton of trash in about two hours, a resumption of an island-wide effort would go a very long way to returning Bermuda to a place we can be proud of.
"Devon Spring Road itself did not look particularly littered, but behind the veil of leaves created by the shrubbery, the spreading sea of trash told another story."
She said KBB was planning a series of clean-ups across the Island.
"There has been much criticism recently of the desecration of our roads and beauty spots by litter, trash and dumping," she added. "KBB will work very hard to ensure that 2006 will be the year that this process is reversed and our island home once again reflects our high standards.
"Bermuda needs all of us. We need to express our pride and pleasure at living here in the way we look after her."
