Your chance to a adopt a friend

The SPCA shelter in Paget is currently looking to re-home four dogs. Prospective owners will be interviewed by staff at the shelter and a home visit may be arranged to ensure the dog is going to a suitable family. All the dogs at the shelter are neutered or spayed on arrival and receive obedience training. Some may have been neglected or cruelly treated by previous owners; others will have been with families who can no longer keep them. Staff will give prospective owners as much information as possible about the animal?s past. The centre does not adopt out to owners who intend to keep the animal chained up outside. Shelter manager Theresa Ince said: ?We are careful who we adopt to here. They fill out questionnaires and we really talk to them. Bermuda is a small place so a lot of the people we know.? This inseparable pair (pictured on Page 1) were brought into the shelter when their owner could no longer look after them. Staff are very keen to have them re-homed together as Latch dotes on his female friend. Although Latch, who is aged about three, is a pit-bull cross and has a very placid temperament. Shelter manager Theresa Ince said: ?They weren?t being mistreated by their previous owners but Latch had entropia, where his eyelashes were growing into his eyes, and a wart on his back. He was a big medical bill, so that may have been why the owners decided not to keep them. We have just found them to be lovely, lovely dogs.? Sassy, the more independent of the pair, is a black collie-cross aged about six. This black-and-tan beagle, aged about seven, has been at the shelter for around a month. He was kept outside on a leash by his previous owner, which caused him to bark a lot. Theresa can?t understand why pet owners would want to keep a dog permanently tied up outside. ?What?s the point in having a pet,? she said. ?It drives us crazy.? Snoopy would be best suited to a home with older children. ?He probably needs a home where the people are home a lot,? said Theresa. ?Someone looking for a companion ? that?s what he really wants.?Ollie, a three-year-old brown and black mongrel, would make a great agility dog, as he has boundless energy and is quick to learn. But he also loves to relax ? lying on his bed for hours at a time. Theresa said: ?I love Ollie. He?s a great dog. He?s lovely and he?s one of the ones we?ll bring out to sit in the office. He?ll lie down on his bed all day but actually when he?s outside he is great and so much fun.?
