Absent DeVent disappoints Perimeter Lane residents
Residents of Perimeter Lane were disappointed last night when Housing Minister Ashfield DeVent failed to show up for a meeting regarding the construction of 38 units in their area.
The Bermuda Housing Corporation plans to build 38 two- and three-bedroom units on the two-acre site which currently holds two homes.
The residents met on Friday evening to express their concerns over the plan. They felt that they had not been consulted and that the project was too ambitious. Area MP Nelson Bascome attended Friday evening?s meeting and told the residents Mr. DeVent would meet with them yesterday.
The residents believe that the location is simply not big enough to house 38 units and parking and that the number of units would cause traffic problems.
However, the residents do not disagree with any construction on the site. Area spokesman John Roach said: ?It?s not that we don?t want this project, most of the people [who would benefit are our people, we just want it downsized.?
They also expressed frustration at the lack of consultation, something that the BHC denied.
The BHC stated in a Press release that it met with the current tenants of the two BHC-owned houses on the property in January and with area residents on March 9.
BHC general manager Vance Campbell said the area residents did not want to air their grievances at the March meeting because Mr. DeVent was not there.
People living on Perimeter Lane felt that Mr. DeVent?s absence was not satisfactory, they wanted another meeting to be scheduled.
However, months passed and no one contacted them for a meeting.
Mr. Bascome called Mr. Roach yesterday to say that Mr. DeVent was not available and that he would most likely be unable to meet with them this week.
When the message was delivered many of the residents expressed their frustration and anger that their concerns were not being addressed.
