Badly-parked cars cause chaos at airport
A tow truck had to move cars parked in a higgledy-piggledy fashion at Bermuda International Airport?s overflow car park after the sheer volume of vehicles left during the Cup Match holiday resulted in motorists being blocked in when they attempted to retrieve their cars.
The holiday is one of the busiest periods for the airport in terms of Bermudians flying off-Island, resulting in a large number of cars being left parked in the main car park and the overflow area, which has around 100 extra spaces.
Despite the extra spaces there was still not enough room for all the cars and this resulted in some motorists leaving their vehicles outside of designated parking spots and blocking in other cars.
When travellers returned to pick up their cars many found they could not not get out of the car park, so airport bosses called for a tow truck to be brought in to remove some of the obstructing vehicles.
The need to increase the number of car parking spaces at the airport is being addressed as part of the Airport Master Plan, which is close to completion and is expected to be handed to Government this September.
Airport general manager Jim Howse said: ?There was a heavy influx of cars during the holiday period, which is traditionally one of the busiest weekends in terms of Bermudians leaving the Island.
The overflow car park was in use but some people were still unable to find parking and that resulted in people returning to find their cars blocked in by other cars, so we called in a tow truck to move some of the vehicles.?
Mr. Howse added: ?What we are doing to address this problem forms part of the Airport Master Plan, where we are looking at the parking needs at the airport.
The complete Master Plan should be presented to the Ministry in late September.?
