Bank of Bermuda wants after-school care centre

School kids could soon be doing their homework in an office of the Bank of Bermuda as they wait for their parents to finish up work for the day.

The bank is seeking permission to use a space within its Bermudiana Road offices for an after school care area for three hours in the late afternoon of each weekday. Up to 64 youngsters aged between five and 13 would be allowed to use the space if planning chiefs approve the scheme.

The space that has been identified for the after school care area is used during the banking day for meetings, a lunchroom, training purposes and also has computer terminals for use by temporary staff and employees. The space also has a kitchen and small library. Now Bank of Bermuda is seeking to provide a homework area when the space is no longer needed during the day — between the hours of 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. — while the youngsters are waiting for their parents to finish work.

The arrangement would be used for 30 weeks of the year.

Because the space identified is 1,600 square foot it could legally accommodate up to 64 children under regulations that state each youngster at such a facility have 25 square foot each.

In a supporting letter to the Development Applications Board, agent Cooper and Gardner architects state it is not anticipated there would be 64 children at the after school facility.

It is also intended the required number of staff will be hired to supervise the children while they are using the space.
