Bar pledges ?zero tolerance?

Trouble-makers at a pub where a reveller was drinking before he was viciously attacked were today warned: violence will not be tolerated.

The 21-year-old and about three other people had been thrown out of the Docksider pub following a ?minor scuffle? in the early hours of Thursday.

Minutes later, the drinkers met up again in the nearby Fagan?s Alley, where the victim was punched in the face, causing him bruising and swelling.

The suspect, a 24-year-old man from St. George?s, had been captured on CCTV footage inside the pub and was arrested later in the evening. Managers of the venue said the incident underlined the importance of their zero tolerance approach to thugs.

They installed a security system featuring 48 cameras earlier this year and say anyone causing trouble anywhere in the pub can be caught immediately and dealt with.

Anthony White, managing director of the Docksider, said the system had helped keep incidents inside his pub to a minimum. ?The message to the trouble-makers is that you are not going to get away with it,? he said. ?We have zero tolerance towards anyone causing trouble. From the second you set foot on the premises you are under CCTV surveillance. Any mischievous behaviour will be dealt with accordingly.

?I can guarantee that any incidents that take place on the premises will result in arrest ? be that for assault or theft.

?The whole idea of the security system is to make our pub safe, and we believe it is working. We have got a good record.?

The victim, from Warwick, who was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, told officers he was assaulted inside the pub before being attacked again at Fagan?s Alley around 1.20 a.m. A second man, a 22-year-old from Pembroke, also alleged he was assaulted by the same suspect inside the pub. The suspect was arrested on Front Street and taken to Hamilton Police Station, where he was detained.

Reid Young, Mr. White?s business partner, said three or four people were involved in a scuffle at the door, and were thrown out by a doorman. Mr. Young said the revellers departed in different directions and must have met up again later at Fagan?s Alley.

Mr. White said other methods of improving security were being considered, and called for more CCTV in the area to deter yobs.

?We pride ourselves on having a safe and friendly environment for patrons to have a good time,? he said. ?If we need to bring in a dress code, or start charging admission, then that?s what we will do. I feel there needs to be more CCTV in public places to act as a deterrent.

?If there were cameras in places like Fagan?s Alley people would be less likely to act violently there ? and if they did, they could be caught afterwards.?
