Barmaid killed in road crash

A 24-year-old Canadian guest worker who arrived in Bermuda less than two months ago, was killed on Monday night in a traffic collision on North Street in Pembroke.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said yesterday that it appeared an auxiliary cycle was travelling West on North Street near the House of India restaurant at about 9.20 p.m. when a motorcycle travelling in the opposite direction, attempted a right turn across the path of the auxiliary cycle, causing the collision.

The young Canadian woman was the passenger on the motorcycle and sustained serious head injuries in the accident.

She was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where she was treated in the Intensive Care Unit, but was pronounced dead around 4.20 a.m. yesterday.

Mr. Caines said the rider of the motorcycle, a 28-year-old Southampton man, was not injured, while the rider of the auxiliary cycle, a 16-year-old Pembroke teen, received minor injuries including abrasions and cuts.

The young woman, who lived in Sandys, worked as a waitress at Robin Hood Pub and Restaurant in Hamilton. Staff were visibly shaken by the news of her death yesterday morning and were unable to speak to but a sombre mood prevailed.

One regular patron said the employee was ?a great girl who got on well with customers and will be greatly missed?. Another patron said she was ?a good person to have around? and very popular bar tender.

Police were also unable to release the woman?s name as her family in Canada had not yet been notified.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to contact P.c. Sean Mullan on 295-0011.

This marks the ninth road traffic fatality for this year.
