Bascome orders teen charity audit
With a completed evaluation of the continuation school operated by Teen Services, the Ministry of Health has asked for an audited statement and breakdown of how Teen Services' funds are used, Health Minister Nelson Bascome has said.
Late last month it was announced that the school, which has offered counselling and secondary education to pregnant teens for the past 35 years, was threatened with closure due to a lack of funding.
Teen Services' operating costs are funded by a $380,000 annual grant from the Ministry of Health along with donations, but The Royal Gazette understands it costs around $500,000 for the school to run all of its programmes.
"The Ministry of Health recognises the contribution that this programme has made over many years and regrets that the Board of Directors of Teen Services has had to make this decision," acting Health Minister Terry Lister said at the time.
But although a potential closure is looming at the school, Teen Services director Michelle Wade-Johnson said everything was operating as normal.
"We are working with them to ensure that their clients get the provided services," Mr. Bascome explained.
