Law firm raises $75K for cancer research

A local law firm stepped out of the court room and onto a marathon course, to raise almost $75,000 for cancer research.

Bermuda?s Mello Jones and Martin placed sixth out of 433 teams for their fundraising efforts, raising $74,594, in the 17th annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund in Boston, Massachusetts, held this past September 18.

The law firm?s 14 participants also had the highest amount of funds raised per walker with $5,328.

The cause hits especially close to home for the firm, who have family members, co-workers and friends battling the disease.

Overall, the walk raised $3.5 million dollars for the Dana Farber hospital, which aims to cure over 400 different forms of cancers.

Half of the money raised by MJM will go specifically towards general cancer research and the other half will go towards research of the disease histiocytosis.

MJM Partner Juliana Snelling took part in the walk in support of her two-year-old son, Jude, who battles a form of the disease, known as Langerhans cell Histiocytosis (LCH).

She spoke as both a mother and a member of the firm, and felt honoured so many had come forth to support the cause.

Jude is currently in remission and has regular check-ups at the hospital, she said, other than that he is a regular young boy.

The soon-to-be three-year-old will be starting pre-school soon, and is described as being the happiest, little, joyful boy you would ever meet.

The walk wasn?t tiring, according to Ms Snelling, who explained there were pictures of cancer patients at each mile mark, which served as a source of inspiration.

?They put spring in your step,? she said.

While the experience was rewarding, it struck a chord for her to see so many young children struggling with the disease. ?You felt that something is wrong in the world when kids are sick, particularly with a potentially terminal disease,? she said.

?Jude?s illness has had a silver lining, as it has opened our eyes to the kindness in the world. I hope in my lifetime there is a cure for this insidious disease.?
