A teenage student was taught an expensive lesson after claiming he left the scene of an accident because he was in a hurry to take a final exam at school.

In Magistrates' Court yesterday, Shae Butterfield, 17, of Cherry Hill, Pembroke, admitted to driving a motorcycle under age, failing to stop after an accident, and driving without due care and attention.

The court heard that the accident happened at 11.35 a.m. on June 16 when the defendant hit the back of a car on Cedar Avenue, Pembroke.

Butterfield admitted he just continued on his way without giving his name and address to the woman driver.

Magistrate Edward King fined Butterfield $50 for riding a motorcycle under age, $250 for failing to stop, and $300 for driving without due care and attention.

A 24-year-old man was fined $1,000 for possessing 3.14 grams of cannabis when he appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Maurice Anthony Whitehurst, of Colony Valley, Southampton, told the Court: "I apologise for being careless and irresponsible."

The court heard Whitehurst was a passenger in a car which was pulled over by Police. A sniffer dog alerted Police to cannabis in the car.

A cigarette box was found under the passenger seat with the cannabis inside it.

Speeder fined

A 33-year-old man was fined $900 and taken off the road for 36 months for speeding at 82 kph.

Dion Correira, of Daisy Field Lane, Sandys, admitted to the offence yesterday in Magistrates' Court.

Drug charge denied

A 26-year-old man denied possession of cannabis when he appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Coltrane Rattery, of Spring Hill, Warwick, was remanded in custody and will be tried today.
