Homless man jailed for one year after targetting the Royal Gazette

The 41-year-old homeless man who swore at a magistrate when he was remanded in custody for two weeks after denying stealing a newspaper and smashing a window has been imprisoned for one year.

Kevin Dillas had nothing to say yesterday during sentencing for stealing a Royal Gazette newspaper on April 5, throwing a bottle through the window of The Royal Gazette Stationary Store and threatening behaviour.

Dillas was spotted shortly after 2 a.m. by a taxi driver taking the newspaper from outside of the Washington Mall in Hamilton.

The driver saw Dillas again near the Stationary Store, when he approached his cab, swinging a bottle at the driver and demanding money.

Police found Dillas, who by then had thrown the bottle through the Stationary Store window, arrested him and charged him with theft, damaging property and the use of offensive language.

Later that morning Dillas swore at Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves, adding: "A man of my character - why would I steal a 75 cent newspaper."
