Jamaican man may be deported

A Jamaican man may be deported this week after a court found he "overstayed his welcome".

Robert David White, 24, from St. Andrew's in Jamaica, arrived in Bermuda on May 18, 2002 with permission to spend 21 days on the Island. He was arrested on October 18, 2003 after he made no application to stay here longer.

Crown counsel Anthony Blackman told Magistrates' Court on Tuesday that White had been staying with friends and doing odd jobs for a landscaping company.

As White could not afford a ticket to Jamaica, Mr. Blackman applied for him to be deported.

However, White said he in fact had a ticket already, and the court heard that while his first ticket had expired, his mother in Jamaica had bought another which he claimed he had until January to use.

White was remanded into custody until it could be discovered whether the ticket was valid or not.

Two 51-year-old tourists, a man and a woman, suffered abrasions after coming off their bike at 2.15 p.m. on Ord Road, Paget.

Bike thief jailed

An habitual bike thief was sentenced to nine months in prison after he admitted in Magistrates' Court yesterday that he had received stolen goods. Acting Magistrate Carlisle Greaves read 27-year-old Kevin Butterfield a list of charges involving nine stolen bikes.

Butterfield pleaded guilty to knowingly receiving two of the stolen vehicles but pleaded not guilty to the seven other charges of stolen cycles.

A stolen Peugeot that Butterfield admitted to receiving was valued at $3,000. When questioned by Police on September 23 why he had taken the cycle Butterfield replied: "The keys were in it and I needed a ride."

Mr. Greaves said the offence for stealing bikes is the most frequent crime to come before the court and he sentenced the man to nine months in jail.
